    Design Notes

    Inspired by her late mother, artist Sarah Thornton created 'Rita Does Jazz' as a riotous depiction of freedom, colour and self-expression. A bon viveur with a huge appetite for life, Sarah's mum loved nothing better than a night out at legendary London jazz club, Ronnie Scott's. With this in mind, Sarah sketched out a vibrant, rhythmical pattern using a mix of black marker pens, water colour and wax crayons.

    This graffiti-like abstract painting reflects a wild and hedonistic world with black tribal markings and feathers sitting alongside vivid pinks, reds, yellows and turquoise.

    We worked with Sarah to transpose 'Rita Does Jazz' onto a luxurious, heavyweight cotton velvet. This vibrant fabric drapes beautifully when used for curtains or blinds or it's equally at home when used as upholstery for chairs, sofas or banquettes. Use it to make a dramatic statement in a pared back interior or go full maximalist and combine it with other patterns and bright, life-affirming colours.

    Statement velvet

    This is a beautiful velvet, soft to the touch and a gorgeous design. I made four cushions backed with a contrast complementary plain. The cushions add a welcome splash of colour to the otherwise plain room scheme and are a unique statement feature.

    I ordered 1.5m of Rita Does Jazz for a reupholstery project on a pretty average chair. It's such a striking design the chair is no longer average! Lovely soft fabric with a gorgeous pattern, need to finish off the cushion to go with it now...

    A stunning velvet design!

    I'm Manchester based upholsterer Heather of Eclectic Chair and I was commissioned to reupholster a mid century armchair in this amazing eye popping velvet. The fabric is a superb quality cotton velvet and the colours really pop, in particular the shocking pink. The design works equally well on small pieces such as bags, cushions and dining chair seats, as it does one big scale such as curtains or a chaise longue. It really is a work of art and adds a real impact and edge to a room scheme. Highly recommended for soft furnishings and upholstery.

    rita does jazz- our new curtains

    i'm so pleased with our new curtains. the rita does jazz fabric was quite a gamble as we knew it would dominate our living room ,but ,following charlotte's advice on greyish/ neutral / lightish colours for walls and furnishings, it has worked out brilliantly. the fabric looks great both with the curtains closed in the evening, making the room feel cheerful, lively, and cosy....and with the cutains open in the daytime ,forming a beautiful colourful frame to our patio doors.

    the curtains hang beautfully from the oak curtain rods, and look great and feel great to the touch.

    it really does feel like having an artwork on the wall- there is more and more to see in it ,and it draws you in to look at it differently at different times. very enjoyable.
