  • How the Leopard got his Spots Velvet

Select to order sample or quantity

Inject a maximalist dose of creative pandemonium into your interior, this rich velvet is suitable for upholstery, curtains, cushions and blinds.

    Design Notes

It's time to enter the exotic world of 'How The Leopard Got His Spots'. Vibrant yellow leopards leap from tree to tree among tropical flowers and lush foliage in this luscious velvet created in collaboration with lino cut artist Alexis Snell.

Each of the 18 characterful leopards featured in the fabric is unique thanks to the handprinted design which is made using traditional lino blocks. These distinctive imperfections add to the beauty of the fabric, resulting in a highly luxurious velvet representing the antithesis of picture-perfect digital designs.

"I wanted to create a design that would be fun, but also timeless," says artist and illustrator Alexis Snell, whose work is often inspired by the natural world. "I wanted the fabric to look like it had always been there – like something you could picture in a hotel in Singapore in the 1940s."

Alexis Snell's mother and grandmother grew up in India and Burma, so her childhood was filled with exotic stories of monkeys, crocodiles and leopards. "Those stories were a massive influence on me, so I came up with the idea of a dark forest at night, featuring a hot colour palette to express an exotic world set against the night sky. I still have my granny's kitchen table and her crystal vases. I love the thought of heirloom pieces being passed down through the family. So I hope people will create something long lasting with my fabric and cherish it for many years to come."

As featured in Elle Decoration and Homes & Gardens magazines, 'How The Leopard Got His Spots' can be used for curtains, blinds, cushions and upholstery. This rich jungle velvet works well alongside other vibrant patterns for a maximalist, colour-clash look, or it can be used to add instant character to a more pared-back scheme.

    Beautiful, high quality fabric

We had a pair of curtains made in this gorgeous material and are delighted with them. The fabric is excellent quality and the pattern is, of course, beautiful. Really good customer service, too.

    Needle Rock and the Leopards!

Hi! Ali here, from Needle Rock Upholstery - a creative and bespoke upholsterer in west Wales. I am always on the lookout for new fabrics; I like bold, bright and quirky – and this is exactly what I got with ‘How the leopard got his spots!’ This fabric is great to work with, quality is excellent, and the colours are vibrant.

The fabric delivery was as expected, and the unwrapping was rather ceremonial 😊. Under the outer packaging, my roll of prized fabric was carefully rolled in reusable brown paper, a Monkey Puzzle Tree sticker sticking the two-ends together; with a hand-written message on the delivery note, and the entire package was lovingly tied together with a beautiful ribbon. I so enjoyed opening this package of fabric!

So far, I have used it on a large reclaimed armchair, teamed with other colours and textures of fabrics all made exclusively in the UK. Once complete, this set will comprise of two armchairs and a large three-seater sofa; and will be available for sale on the Needle Rock website www.needlerock.co.uk/shop .

I look forward to shopping at the Monkey Puzzle Tree again very soon. Thanks Charlotte for a great product, and fantastic customer service!

    Beautiful fabric to work with!

I'm Manchester based upholsterer Heather of Eclectic Chair, and I used this velvet to reupholster a chaise longue and an occasional chair. It's a lovely quality and weight of velvet and the colours are vibrant. Unlike a plain velvet it does not show Mark's which is a huge bonus. Highly recommended for upholstery use.

Beautiful fabric - perfect for a roman blind for our home office

This fabric is so striking and beautiful, we just had to find a place for it in our home! It's a tactile velvet with a bold pattern which means we've been able to add some luxury (as well as fun!) to our home office. Charlotte was incredibly helpful and the fabric came beautifully wrapped when it was delivered. We'd definitely recommend, and wish we could find another spot for this fantastic fabric.
