The Monkey Puzzle Tree collaborates with artists to produce truly unique designs, made in England and created to add a lasting sense of beauty and individuality to both residential and commercial interiors.
The Monkey Puzzle Tree was founded by Charlotte Raffo in 2017, combining her lifelong passion for interiors with her expertise in luxury textile and product development
‘We run The Monkey Puzzle Tree like an independent record label, where each artist retains their own style, identity and creative freedom and the aim is that we can help them earn a passive income which will fund them to continue with their original work.’ - Charlotte Raffo
A strong social conscience is at the core of our business, and we pay our artists a generous royalty and support British manufacturing by making all products in well established English factories with excellent environmental and ethical records.
Each artist the company works with has their own very distinctive style.
Artist Joel Weaver creates tiny precise pencil miniature drawings, and has previously worked with Damien Hirst and Ryan Gander. Printmaker Alexis Snell is well known for her stunning use of dark gothic imagery. Sarah Thornton uses vibrant watercolours to express her passion for life, and Sarah Jane Palmer creates unique and sometimes naughty designs with hidden secrets that may only be appreciated on a closer look!
The name comes from Charlotte’s fondness for the strange but beautiful Monkey Puzzle trees. When Charlotte was born, her parents planted one in their garden, which grew with her - including eventually producing small, baby trees at the same time that Charlotte had her two children.
The monkey puzzle tree's thick, curved branches and layers of spiked leaves give it a strange yet beautiful appearance, and it can live for up to 1000 years.
The timeless and unusual qualities of the monkey puzzle tree have continuously inspired Charlotte through the years, so it seemed right to honour it with the name of our design studio.
